This is an authentic original theatrical movie poster printed in 2003 for Chris Kentis' survival thriller Open Water. Importantly for our title-year rule, specialist original-poster references identify this exact ocean artwork as a 2003 printing, even though Lions Gate's U.S. theatrical rollout occurred in 2004.

The poster is the striking advance-style “Who Will Save You?” design, placing the two stranded divers almost impossibly small against a vast, threatening ocean and storm-filled sky. The minimalist composition is particularly effective because it captures the central terror of the film without relying on a giant shark or character portrait.

The lower campaign text reads “Based on true events,” while the upper tagline asks “Who will save you?” The film follows Susan and Daniel, played by Blanchard Ryan and Daniel Travis, after a dive-boat counting error leaves them stranded miles from shore. The movie was inspired by the disappearance of scuba divers Tom and Eileen Lonergan.

Open Water became one of the notable low-budget independent horror successes of the early 2000s. With an estimated production budget of roughly $500,000, it ultimately grossed more than $54 million worldwide.

For collectors of survival horror, shark films, independent cinema, Lions Gate releases and early-2000s theatrical posters, I actually like this design considerably more than some of the later shark-fin artwork. It has a clean, ominous quality that makes an excellent display poster.
